**For the month of February, students signed up for a day to share something they love with the class--this could be a treat, a book, a pet, a stuffed animal, a person, a picture, etc. Please ask your student when their day is!**
Spelling/Vocabulary: We spent a lot of time in class this week reviewing our vocabulary words for our test today. We played some fun games and I'm anxious to finish grading the tests!
Reading: We completed some comprehension lessons using questioning as our focus strategy. We learned exciting facts about the moon--Mrs. Hansen is now teaching the moon for science so we were extra prepared. Ask your student about strategies to answer questions while reading. We are up to chapter 5 in Lighting Thief. We are all enjoying this wonderful book! We've done several activities this week including trying to decide if Percy had ADHD, seeing how Greek Mythology influences U.S. architecture and applying our strategies for answering questions while reading about Percy's adventures.
Writing: We've finished up our personification unit. We did journal responses with the Lightning Thief and will continue to do extensive writing with each chapter. This next week we'll be learning about the RAFT method of writing.
Math: This week the students learned about ratios, rates, and unit rates. They were wonderful helpers in figuring out what would be the better buy on food items for a Super Bowl party. We even took a mini test on Friday and they all did wonderful! Next week we will move on to proportions and scales.
Social Studies: We have begun to learn about Ancient Rome. We looked at their land area and learned about their Republic Government. Ask your student to explain the similarities with Rome's government and ours today.
Science: The students now have Mrs. Hansen for science. She is teaching about moon phases. They learned about the different Apollo missions and learned all the different phases of the moon.
