Friday, Jan. 21

We had a wonderful time at Sports Hero Day! Many of the students were able to get autographs from different athletes. The biggest highlight for most students was seeing Jimmer Fredette and getting his autograph :)

Reading: We're into chapter 2 in the Lightning Thief. Students are enjoying reading this novel in class and the different activities we're doing along with it. We've also been talking about the three areas of reading that we are focusing on. Ask your student to tell you the three areas (comprehension, fluency, and accuracy).

Writing: We are going to be writing extensively with the Lightning Thief. This week we also spent some more time on Personifications.

Spelling/Vocabulary: We had a test today. Vocabulary test is Jan. 28th and Vocabulary Logs are due that Friday as well. Please study the words at home! If you've lost your list, see the blog post about it below.

Math: The students have been working really hard on dividing fractions and understanding why the algorithm (keep, change, flip) works. Many students took their work home to explain to their parents about the connections. They will be tested on Monday.

Science: Our class has finished Microorganisms. They took a test on Wednesday with Miss Lewis and we look forward to seeing the scores. Next Mrs. Hansen will be in our classroom to teach about the moon phases.

Social Studies: We studied the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Spartans. The war greatly "crippled" the Greeks as so many died and the region became ununited. This abled other areas to come in and conquer including Alexander the Great who conquered a huge area. He brought Greek culture into the surrounding areas. This time period was called Hellinism. After his death the region was split into 3 parts. Next we will study Roman Culture.
