Reading: We started "The Lightning Thief" this week :) We've had a lot of fun talking about different aspects of the book and completing a Discipline Referral form for Percy Jackson. Be sure to ask your student about the activities we're doing with this great book!
Writing: We finished up our snowflake personifications and they look wonderful hanging up in the hallway! We did a lot of writing with "The Lightning Thief" this week. Students did a good job writing about their reading and making sure they had all the components on the rubric.
Spelling/Vocabulary: Test was today. Next week is the last week of vocabulary words that will be on the unit test. Please remember to be studying your words at home!!! The unit vocabulary test will be on Jan. 28th!
Math: The students were tested on Multiplying Fractions. We took a little longer studying this concept as it is hard for the students to grasp why the rules are different from adding and subtracting fractions. We will divide fractions next week. Our fraction gardens turned out beautiful and are hanging in the hall for all to see.
Science: The class has really enjoyed learning about microorganisms and has been able to do some fun experiments. This week they swabbed different places around the school to see which areas will grow the most mold.
**They will have their end of unit microorganism test next Wednesday!
Social Studies: We learned about the Greece Olympics this week and the students had a blast competing in them Here are our champions:

Friday, Jan. 7
Math: The students began learning how to multiply fractions. We will be working with fractions times a whole number, fraction times a fraction, and mixed numbers times mixed numbers. Ask your student about the short cut called "kitty Kornors" to make the problems easier.
Science: Students continue to learn about microorganisms with Miss Lewis. Next week they will be growing mold from places around the school.
Social Studies: Students will be competing in our Greek Olympics next week. We will be wrestling, throwing a discus and javelin, and having chariot races.
Reading: We read a Greek Myth called, "The Flight of Icarus." We worked on our summarizing skills by completing a summary map. We had more time for SSR this week and we'll continue having more SSR time in class. We decided to increase our Reading Stamina goal to 40 minutes. Students need to be sure to have an SSR book to read in class. Next week, we will be starting "The Lightning Thief." I am very excited to began this novel with the class!
Writing: We've been working on creating personifications. We read the book "Snowflake Bentley" as a class and students wrote several personifications about snowflakes. Students will be choosing their favorite personification and putting it together with a snowflake we began creating in class. Look for these to be displayed in the hallway on SEP night!
Spelling/Vocabulary: Spelling test was today. Only 2 more weeks of vocabulary words until the big unit test! We played musical vocabulary this week and many students struggled to answer the questions about the vocabulary words correctly. Please make sure you are studying your words at home.

The Lightning Thief
Next week we will be starting a whole class shared reading with the Lightning Thief. Some students have read this novel before. However, in class we will be working on the three different aspects of reading as we do activities involving fluency, accuracy and comprehension. We will also be doing daily writing with journal prompts. The students will be provided with a rubric and will be practicing grading themselves on the rubric. One key aspect of the rubric deals with restating the question. An important purpose for having students respond to their reading in complete, thought-out paragraphs is to help prepare them for Junior High. I'm excited to start this novel with the class and know that we will all learn a lot and have a ton of fun!

Fraction Flowers
Before break the students were working on a project called Fraction Flowers. Many students were able to finish in class but some did not. The "garden" is due on Friday, January 7th. Ask your child if theirs is done of if they should be working on it at home.

December Reading Days Calendars are due on Wednesday, Jan. 5th. If you can't find yours, have your parent sign a piece of paper indicating how many days a week you read and how many days total you read in December.
January Calendars will go home this week.
Personal Narratives will be due once the lab printer is working again.
All literacy late work and homework is due by Friday, Jan. 7th--no exceptions. If the assignments are not turned in, they will remain a zero.
