Thursday, March 17

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!!! Don't forget it is SEP night. We look forward to seeing you! Spelling/Vocabulary: Reading: We will be finishing up the Lightning Thief on Monday :( I'm sad to see it come to an end. We've all enjoyed reading this action-packed book! Writing: To celebrate St. Patrick's Day, we worked on Limericks. We learned what a Limerick is and how to write one. We practiced writing Limericks and put our favorite ones on a Leprechaun face. Look for these to be displayed during SEPs! Math: The students have been studying the customary and metric measuring units. It is always fun to see their opinions change from the beginning of the unit to the end. They start off only liking customary because the metric is foreign to them; by the end they think it is so much easier and would rather use metric measurements. Social Studies: We have begun to learn about the Middle Ages that took place all around the world from 500-1500 ad. Science: The students did a wonderful job on their presentations. They were very creative!

Friday, March 11

*We had Fun Friday today. Any work not turned in by 3:15 will remain a permanent zero in the gradebook.*

Spelling/Vocabulary: Vocabulary test was today. Grades will be posted as soon as possible. Next week, we'll be back to a regular spelling list.

Reading: We are almost done with The Lightning Thief! We will be finishing it up next week and then work on some life-size characters from the book! We also learned about advertising techniques and then incorporated those techniques into an advertisement for Crusty's Waterbed Palace. Look for these in the classroom during SEPs.

Writing: We continued doing some quickwrites and journal prompts. We also learned about idioms. Ask your student what idiom they chose to draw. Next week we'll work on our persuasive essays.

Math: The students continued to graph functions and went on to learning about angles and how to measure them. We worked with a protractor; to my surprise many students had never used one before. We did a "Math Dance" to learn new transformation vocabulary. Ask your student to show you the wonderful dance and point out the vocabulary words.

Science: The students should be researching different parts on the Solar System with a partner. Their information is due on Tuesday with a visual aid. They will be teaching the class about their topic.

Social Studies: We continued to watch Ben Hur this week.

The unit vocabulary test will be Friday, March 11^th. The following is a list of the 25 vocabulary words:

Friday, March 4

Spelling/Vocabulary: We finished up our last week of spelling words before the vocabulary test which is Friday, March 11th. Students need to be sure to be studying the word definitions, antonyms, and synonyms. Make sure you STUDY!!!

Reading: We've been doing some fun comprehension lessons with visualization. One of our favorite lessons used the book Miss Smith's Incredible Storybook. We continued reading the Lightning Thief. We started making modern gods/goddess with partners. Look for these to be hanging in the hallway during SEPs.

Writing: We continued to respond to daily Lightning Thief journal prompts. We also did a couple of "quickwrites" where we wrote everything we could think of about a topic for one minute. This will help students develop writing fluency. We learned about the "RAFT" method of writing. Ask your student what they did for their "RAFT" assignment.

Math: Students were very busy this week taking their integer test on Monday and their 7th grade math placement test on Tuesday. We will not be finding out their scores for a very long time. They also started graphing functions this week.

Science: The students took their end of Unit test on Moon Phases. They will start learning about the Solar System next week with Mr. Groneman.

Social Studies: We have started watching Ben Hur. This is a long movie that was filmed in 1959 but I feel that it really helps the students see what Rome was like at that time. They see what the places looked like, get a feel for how the people lived, dressed, fought, and what they did for entertainment.

Junior High Field Trip Tomorrow

Just a reminder that tomorrow we will be walking to the Junior High to see a Shakespeare play. Students need to be on time, wear good shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.

Student of the Week: Sara Beardall

Friday, Feb. 25

First of all, thank you to my wonderful students who made my birthday fabulous! I walked into a decorated classroom and was sung Happy Birthday. We had a great ice cream party in the afternoon, complete with 2 different kinds of cupcakes! Thanks to all of my students for the presents and cards! :)




Spelling/Vocabulary: Spelling test was today. Vocabulary test is next Friday. Study your words!!! The most missed types of questions on vocabulary tests are antonyms and synonyms. Be sure you know how to define the word and be able to put it in a sentence that shows the correct meaning of the word.

Reading: We continued reading the Lightning Thief this week. We made trading cards for a character of our choice. We also started our new comprehension unit: visualization. We learned about our "6" senses and how we can use them to make a mental image while reading.

Writing: This week was our last opportunity to finish our personal narratives in class. They will be due, typed, by Thursday. In class this week, we've been working on our Freedom Festival Essays. Finishing this and typing it will be part of student's homework packet next week. Essays will be due on 3/4. Please make sure your child follows the guidelines on the blue information sheet and please read your child's essay before he/she turns it in.

Math: We continued to learn about integers. Students subtracted positive and negative numbers, put them on number lines and read about them in story problems. We will test next week.

Social Studies: Rome is coming to an end. The students learned about the Fall of Rome.

Friday, Feb. 18

We had a lot of fun (and a couple falls) on our ice skating field trip! Many thanks to Delora Argyle, Julia Hendron and Tracy Folsom for chaperoning.





Math: The students have been working hard at learning about negative numbers. They always seem to get so excited because they spend their lives being curious about these numbers and not quite knowing what to do with them. They have done well at picking up the rules and patterns these new numbers follow.

Social Studies: We learned about the daily life of Ancient Rome. A lot of the information we have comes from the city of Pompeii when it was covered in ash by Mt. Vesuvius. The people had no warning and many were found doing regular daily activities. We learned about the large buildings made with archways, domes, and the start of concrete. The class was very interested in the gladiators, chariot races, and Roman Bath Time.

Science: Ask your students to tell you why we have phases of the moon. Can we see the moon only at night? What phase of the moon can you see right now?

Spelling/Vocabulary: Test was today. Make sure your student is filling out their vocabulary log every week in class so they won't be overwhelmed with vocabulary the week of the test. Make sure you are studying your vocabulary words and spelling words each week!

Reading: We read about Medusa's funeral in the Lightning Thief this week and held a funeral for the hated monster. We had a fun time acting out different parts. Ask your student who they portrayed for our funeral. Look below to see some pictures from this event.













Writing: For every chapter in the Lightning Thief, we did a daily journal entry. We've also written an obituary for Medusa this week. In addition, we've written about our favorite scenes so far.

Ice Skating Field Trip

Tomorrow is our long awaited ice skating field trip! Remember to bring a sack lunch if you did not sign up for school lunch. Also, you need to WEAR SOCKS that are higher than ankle socks. In addition, you should wear pants and bring a jacket and gloves as it is cold in an ice skating rink.
Please be on time tomorrow so we can get to the buses. See ya on the ice!

Peak Reader Program

Students will be sent home with a blue paper explaining the Peak Reader Program our school is participating in. Students must read 500 minutes in the month of March and sign the reading chart and rules and guidelines sheet in order to qualify. The blue paper will be due on April 1st. The program will not allow any late entries. Students who complete this program will receive one free child day pass to Seven peaks and one activity pass to Trafalga Fun Center.

Participation in the Peak Reader Program is optional, but students should easily be able to complete the program.

This reading program is in addition to our monthly Ken Garff reading calendars and the weekly reading minutes on student's homework packets.

Valentine's Day

We had a wonderful Valentine's Day party yesterday! Special thanks to our moms who helped: Delora Argyle for organizing the party, Molly Murdock for playing a fun charades-type game, Shannon Brown for providing funny Valentine's Day mad libs, and Florrie Nuttall for giving everyone a delicious frosted sugar cookie! We are grateful to these gracious ladies who made our Valentine's Day fabulous!

Before our party, we had a box contest. We were very impressed with the boxes! Students were very creative and we could tell they put in a lot of time and effort to create their masterpieces! Pictured below are the contest winners:
